Originally from Georgia, Ms. Byers earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1992 at the University of Georgia and then a Master of Early Childhood Education from the University of North Georgia in 1995. She taught many levels, including Prekindergarten, Kindergarten, 4th, and 5th grades in both public and private schools. She was a stay at home mom to her two sons for several years before returning to work as Director at HMC. She’s been an active volunteer at Patuxent Presbyterian Church, Leonardtown Elementary, and in her children’s activities. She is pleased to have joined HMC as the Director in 2013 after having been a long time member of Patuxent Presbyterian and an HMC mom. She enjoys meeting each family and watching their children grow and learn about God’s love for them.
Ms. Sowa came to HMC because her children attended, and she subbed in many different classes before being hired as a classroom teacher in 2008. Ms. Sowa is a Maryland State Department of Education Qualified Lead Preschool Teacher. At HMC, she has been blessed with the opportunity to work with kids in a Christian environment helping them to prepare for school and learn about God. She grew up in Baltimore and moved to St Mary's County for her husband’s job as an aerospace engineer. She earned a BS in Finance at the University of Maryland and also earned her MBA. After working as a financial analyst, she “retired" to raise her kids. As a family, they attend Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Solomons and enjoy activities such as sailing, traveling, gardening, and cooking/eating.
Ms. Piland has been a teacher at Honey MacCallum since 1991. After studying Elementary Education and Business at Virginia Tech, she and her husband settled in St. Mary’s County, where he works at the base. Her two children attended HMC over 20 years ago, and she felt this was where she should be. Ms. Piland is a Maryland State Department of Education Qualified Lead Preschool Teacher. She finds the excitement of the children contagious, and teaching them never gets old. She feels blessed to share her faith and plant seeds for Christ with these young children’s families. She is a member of the Patuxent Presbyterian Church, where she has served as an Elder, Deacon, and Sunday School teacher. In her spare time, she operates a craft business, Picket Fence Primitives, where she designs and creates one of a kind folk art characters. She enjoys long walks with her husband and dog, family vacations at the beach, and spending time with her grandson.
Ms. Cherie has been a member of Patuxent Presbyterian Church since 1992, during which time she has been active as a Deacon, Sunday school teacher, and was a member of the HMC School Board. Her son attended HMC, and she has been a part of the HMC team working in the Mother's Morning Out program since 2005. She believes her most fabulous job has been being a mom. Her hobbies are cooking, reading, and scrapbooking. She has spent her career working with children in daycare and pre-school settings. Ms. Cherie is a Maryland State Department of Education Qualified Lead Preschool Teacher.
Ms. Godfrey is originally from Quebec, Canada. She graduated from Bishop’s University with a Bachelor of Arts honors degree in psychology and music, followed by a diploma in education at McGill University. She taught at a boys’ private school grades 2-5 in Montreal, and enjoyed many years of teaching private piano lessons to young children while raising five biological children. She and her husband became resource parents for foster care in 2009 and have taken care of several foster children. They added two more children to their family through adoption. After substituting in many classes at Honey MacCallum, Ms. Godfrey is happy to officially join HMC staff in the PreK class and relishes the opportunity to teach the students songs about God’s love for them. In her spare time, Ms. Godfrey enjoys designing floral arrangements, gardening, canning, cooking, baking, sewing, traveling, reading, creating cards, packing Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes, and spending time with her family and grandsons.
Ms. Boynton’s youngest daughter attended HMC years ago and Mrs. Boynton has been a substitute in all of our classes for the past few years. A graduate of James Madison University, with an anthropology and early childhood education degree, Mrs. Boynton taught for five years before staying home to raise her three girls and follow her husband around the country with the Navy. Mrs. Boynton is excited to get back to work on a regular basis in the classroom. When she’s not at school, Mrs. Boynton enjoys baking, running, taking her dog, George, for long walks, and spending time with her family.
Mrs. Humenick is originally from Long Island, New York. She graduated from Alfred University in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in Fine Art and a minor in Childhood Education. She worked as a substitute teacher and assistant teacher before marrying her husband, a Naval officer. She moved often with the Navy and was happy to finally settle in SoMd in 2014 to become a stay at home mom. Both her children attended HMC and she is thrilled to be a part of the HMC family! She is active in her kids’ scouting activities and volunteers at the Solomons Mission Center. She also enjoys photography, cake decorating, and sailing on her family's sailboat.
Ms. Nicole is originally from Minnesota, but has moved 9 times since meeting her husband who served in the Marine Corps. Between all those moves, at some point or another, all 3 of her children have attended HMC. After her youngest started grade school she started as a substitute for all classes and now is very excited to officially join the staff as a MMO teacher. When she is not at HMC, you can find her watching her kids at a swim meet, baseball tournament or Lacrosse game. If there is any time left after that she loves making floral arrangements for her church and friends, cooking, baking and shopping.
Ms. Donna came to HMC as a parent many years ago and then became a substitute at the school when her boys entered elementary school. While subbing, she realized that teaching MMO 2s was her passion. She joined the HMC staff full time as a MMO teacher in 2016 and is a Maryland State Department of Education Qualified Lead Preschool Teacher. Her hope is to have all her little friends love school as much as she does. In the past, she has taught CCD at St. Michael’s Catholic Church and volunteered at The Chesapeake Public Charter School. Ms. Donna loves spending time with her family and friends. She and her husband stay very busy with their two teenage boys.
Ms. Trish joined the HMC staff as a MMO teacher in 2017 after subbing at the preschool. She is a Maryland State Department of Education Qualified Lead Preschool Teacher. Ms. Trish loves teaching our littlest friends. She graduated from Frostburg State University with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary/Middle Education and taught middle school math before becoming a Navy wife and stay at home mom. She and her husband have two young adult children and two very loved hound dogs that fill their empty nest. Their family attends First Saints Community Church in Leonardtown.
Ms. Simons is originally from Frederick, Maryland but has gradually made her way down the western side of Maryland until landing here in St. Mary's in 2017. From an early age, she knew her future would revolve around working with children. Whether it was babysitting, nursery, day camps, teaching academy or working for a neurodevelopmental center in college, Ms. Simons has always had a passion for helping children and families grow and develop together. She graduated from Messiah University with a dual degree in special education and elementary education before beginning her journey in the public school systems. She has worked in a variety of different special educator roles, primarily working with students on the spectrum. A few years after coming to St. Mary's, she stepped down from the public school system to focus on starting a family. In her off time, Ms. Simons enjoys spending time with her family, reading, painting and taking care of her animals.
Ms. Lisa is originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After studying Sociology at the University of Maryland, she went on to complete her education at the University of Pittsburgh with a Master’s degree in Social Work. Her early career included working in Early Intervention, foster care for medically complex children, and as a NICU social worker. Ms. Lisa moved to southern Maryland in 2004 and then again in 2010 with her naval aviator husband and family. It was during this time that her children attended HMC Preschool. Ms. Lisa is excited to be back at HMC as a MMO teacher! Ms. Lisa stays very busy with her 3 active kids and 3 dogs. She enjoys traveling with her family, exploring, and finding new adventures.
